US Intelligence Has Been Manipulating Wikipedia For Over A Decade: Wiki Co-Founder
The co-founder of Wikipedia, Larry Sanger, revealed that there have been suspicions of US intelligence interference and manipulation of the online encyclopedia. He spoke with journalist Glenn Greenwald on his "System Update" podcast and discussed the known efforts of US intelligence in "information warfare," which have made Wikipedia a tool of control by the left-liberal Washington deep state.
Some observers who closely monitored US government involvement in social media platforms and Wikipedia commented on the CIA's role in running Wikipedia. Sanger presented evidence that CIA and FBI computers were used to edit Wikipedia as early as 2008, raising questions about whether this practice continues today.
According to Sanger, intelligence agencies influence Wikipedia by paying off influential people to promote their agendas or by cultivating their own talent within the community to push their desired narratives.
Sanger stated that intelligence and information warfare primarily occur online, particularly on websites like Wikipedia. He considers Wikipedia to be the most biased encyclopedia in history, with US intelligence manipulating it for over a decade since its founding in 2001.
During the interview, Greenwald brought up the Wikipedia entry on the Biden-Ukraine conspiracy theory, highlighting its biased treatment. Despite evidence of Hunter Biden receiving substantial payments from Burisma executives, Wikipedia's article dismisses it as a conspiracy theory, raising questions about the site's neutrality.
The transcript of the interview shows Greenwald criticizing Wikipedia's handling of the Biden-Ukraine scandal, pointing out its tendency to conform to a liberal worldview and Democratic Party talking points.
Both Greenwald and Sanger agreed that Wikipedia's Covid-related entries are also subject to propaganda and skewed information. Greenwald mentioned that leading scientists in the US Department of Energy and the FBI consider the lab leak theory as the most likely explanation for the Covid pandemic's origin, but Wikipedia's entries portray it as a conspiracy theory favored only by right-wing enthusiasts.
Sanger noted that Wikipedia used to be anti-establishment in the past, but between 2005 and 2012, it underwent a shift and became an establishment mouthpiece, which surprised him given its initial trajectory in 2001.
